What is The Natural Pet Nutrition Alliance?
The Natural Pet Nutrition Alliance is a unique collection of small business owners serving the Albuquerque, Corrales, and Rio Rancho area. We believe in a natural approach to promote healthy lifestyles for Greater Albuquerque’s pet population. We provide services, such as pet nutrition education, natural remedies, and grooming or self-bathing services. In addition, we stock safe, humane products and pet accessories. We support each other’s businesses by providing referrals to each other for products that one store may not sell. We understand the benefits of small businesses supporting each other and we try to follow through on that belief. Therefore, we decided to come together to help the greater Albuquerque community through our combined knowledge and resources.
What is your business philosophy?
Our joint business philosophy is to provide the best natural products to keep your pets healthy. We believe that nutrition is the cornerstone of good health, and that a natural diet based an individual pet’s needs is a critical part of his or her well-being and longevity. Improving a pet’s diet may even reduce pet health issues and associated veterinary care costs.
What do you offer that competitors do not?
In short, customer service and great products! All of our stores offer what we believe to be the best and healthiest natural pet foods. We also provide a wealth of information regarding these foods as well as tips on pet health topics. Our well-versed staff can speak on nutrition, flea/tick treatments and skin/coat health, to name a few. At our stores, you’ll not get that “blank stare” when you ask a pet-related question. If we don’t have the information you are looking for at our fingertips, we can help you find it. We constantly research, train and learn as the pet market evolves. Keep in mind, this is not just a “job” for us, it is what we love to do.
What is your greatest challenge?
We believe right now, our biggest challenge is educating the public on what is truly best for our companion animals. The overwhelming majority of pet information available is based on opinion, false claims or just long-standing myths, like dry food cleaning your pet’s teeth. Furthermore, many of the conventional approaches to caring for our pets have been proven wrong time and again. As a group of well-informed and concerned local retailers, we are willing to share what we have learned for the betterment of our local pets.
In what area do you invest the most energy?
We spend a great deal of effort learning and imparting our knowledge to provide pet parent shoppers with great customer service. As small businesses, we have the advantage of offering product information and helpful pet health tips that offset any potential price discrepancies from big box stores. Every pet has individual needs and we are here to help satisfy those needs in the healthiest way possible.
What contributions are you most proud of?
All of our stores participate in local rescue; through fundraisers, donations, volunteering, and/or adoption events. In special cases, we may tap into our personal expertise to help solve a rescued pet’s health concern, such as recommending a natural solution for gastrointestinal disturbances or skin conditions, like a recent case of demodectic mange. Of course, great health and vitality increases any pet’s adoptability.
What motivates you to succeed besides the desire to make money?
Each member of the Alliance went into business for one simple reason: to improve the health and well-being of your pets. We are here because we care – it’s that simple. Over 90% of pet guardians still buy their pet’s food at grocery stores and big box stores, but most of the foods and products offered in those stores are not produced with the final consumers – pets – in mind. Mass-market pet foods are manufactured for the least amount of money and greatest potential of profit for the corporations that make them. By contrast, the foods and products we offer in our stores are carefully selected for the quality, safety, and biological appropriateness of their ingredients. We have all made the conscious decision to not sell foods full of cheap fillers, dubious meat by-products, or artificial dyes and preservatives. We truly want your pets to be happy and healthy.
What inspires you?
On the other side of every person who walks into one of our stores is a companion animal who needs us to be an advocate for his or her health. We’ve all seen firsthand with our own pets the benefits of good nutrition, and we want to share our knowledge and experience with every pet parent we encounter.
